Holbox (in Mayan : black hole, black hole) is a small Mexican island located in the extreme north of the state of Quintana Roo , 10 kilometers off the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula . It has an area of ​​40 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, and about 34 kilometers of beach to the north. It is intermittently connected to the peninsula by a sand bar , with several channels that connect it to the sea and the Yalahau Lagoon .

It has a population of 1,198 inhabitants according to the INEGI Population and Housing Count in 2005 .

Holbox has become a tourist destination, particularly in adventure tourism and relaxation. One of the main activities of the inhabitants of this island is lobster fishing, governed by the closed season; In local restaurants you can taste lobster-based dishes, you can't miss the delicious lobster pizza!

Although the island is located on the outer border of the Caribbean, its environment is called Caribbean with sets of colorful houses.

Isla Pasión is a small islet that is 10 minutes from Holbox by boat. It is recommended to enjoy virgin beaches, the sun and the sea; for its calm atmosphere and its tropical adventure space, far from civilization.

Cabo Catoche , is a "tip" on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico located approximately 53 kilometers (32.9 mi) north of Cancun . Its location belongs to the continental territory of Holbox Island. Cabo Catoche determines the continental division between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

In the vicinity of Cabo Catoche , and during the colonial era, a Catholic temple was built, which is known as Boca Iglesia. There are no passable roads to reach Cabo Catoche by land, only by sea can it be accessed to visit the ruins of Ekab and Boca Iglesia .
